Charlotte Perkins Gilman (1860-1935), born in Hartford, Connecticut, was a great-niece of Harriet Beecher Stowe. Among the 200 short stories and books she wrote during her lifetime are The Man-Made World, Human Work, and a major text of the women's movement, Women and Economics. Denise D. Knight is a professor of English at the State University of New York at Cortland and the author of Charlotte Perkins Gilman: A Study of the Short Fiction.
