Although genre is often viewed as simply a method for labeling different types of writing, Dean (English education, Brigham Young University) argues that exploring genre theory can help teachers energize their classroom practices. She synthesizes theory and research about genres, and provides applications to help high school teachers make connections between reading and writing, eliminate the writing product/process dichotomy, and offer a sound foundation for multimedia instruction. Because genre theory connects writing and life, she provides detailed suggestions for class projects which can be modified for different grade levels and student interests. There is no subject index.
